A Fretful High School Student Manifests Quite A Few Alcohol-Related Difficulties, Gets Expelled From School, And Has To See The School Therapist
Stephen was a sixteen year old high school sophomore who was exhibiting a number of alcohol-related problems at school. Consequently, the principal told him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school therapist, before he would be permitted to return to school.
Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to explain his school discharge to his Mom and Dad. His parents were "old school" and told Stephen that getting kicked out of school was not a practical educational game plan. They explained to Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would probably be like a lead weight around his legs that may impair his educational attainment for the rest of his life. Not only this, but Stephen's Mom and Dad were quite displeased that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his pals in the second.
It was obvious that his Mother and Father were in total accord with Stephen's principal and told Stephen that he had to see Miss Pender, the school psychologist. After his discussion with his parents, Stephen in the end agreed to see Miss Pender the next school day. So Stephen called the school and scheduled an appointment to see Miss Pender the next morning before school.
When Stephen went to see Miss Pender, she immediately reviewed all of the alcohol-related problems Stephen had experienced and asked him if he knew why his recent alcohol-related actions gave the school administrators room for alarm.
Quite frankly, Stephen was not sure why the principal suggested that he see a school therapist. As he expressed to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional counselor about his drinking behavior? Since nearly all of his pals drink as much if not more than he does, for all intents and purposes, drinking is no big issue. Stated another way, if just about everybody is drinking, why is this such a big deal?
In short, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was beginning to foil his ability to behave like a responsible young man. As conveyed by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your buddies drink wine, hard liquor, wine coolers, or beer does not mean that it is right for you."
Fortunately, Miss Pender was quite organized for her appointment with Stephen. She showed him reports and research studies she had underlined that summarized various drinking facts and statistics that applied to most people in general. Then she showed Stephen a lot of information that applied particularly to adolescents.
After Miss Pender articulated the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse facts and statistics, it was plain to see that what Miss Pender taught Stephen was a real source of revelation for him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only took the time to explain the short term and the long term effects of alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency, but she also took the time to validate what she was saying with alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse facts and statistics that related to people in general, and especially to underage drinkers.
Certainly, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen without pause grasped why he should not be engaging in abusive and hazardous drinking with or without his pals any longer. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the material she presented and then accepted her reinstatement into class.
