A Health And Physical Education Teacher Teaches Her Students About The Significant Issues Involved In Alcohol Dependency Signs

Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the most popular private high school in the region. Although she had been teaching for only five years, she had already secured a reputation as a person with instructional methods that encouraged and inspired pupils to think and to learn.

For instance, one Thursday afternoon she addressed the pupils in her class and stated the following: "For the next two or three days we are going to learn about some usual alcoholism signs from a general viewpoint and we are also going to learn about several of the most common signs of alcoholism from a more specific perspective."

"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will definitely confirm that an individual with a drinking problem is an individual who is addicted to alcohol, but the more signs that an individual exhibits, the greater the likelihood that he or she is an individual who is addicted to alcohol."

Miss Jackson then informed the class that each individual would be held responsible for researching three alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her conclusions to the class via a twenty minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcohol dependency signs that were discussed and presented in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked her students to go over the list and rank the top six alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcohol dependency. After approximately fifteen minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and told the pupils in her class that after she reviews the numbers, she will present her findings the next school day.

Miss Jackson asked her students to go over the information on the sheet of paper she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any questions, concerns, or issues. Within 20 or 30 seconds, almost every pupil in the class raised his or her hand. It was evident that the students had some concerns, issues, or questions about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism specialists. For instance, virtually every student had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism experts, namely, "Do you feel exceedingly ill when you abstain from drinking?"

Miss Jackson then informed her students why this answer was the most unambiguous sign of alcohol dependency. She emphasized the fact that the major difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol addiction and not with alcohol abuse.

Primarily this means that when an individual who is addicted to alcohol abruptly quits drinking, she or he will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the individual who is addicted to alcohol, the pupils started to recognize the fundamental difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction.

A few minutes later the bell rang, meaning that the end of class had arrived. Based on the excitement exhibited by the students when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson knew that she had encouraged and stimulated the pupils in her classroom to stop and think about an important social problem and health issue that exists in our country.
