A Ninth Grade Student Drinks Excessively With His Classmates, Experiences Alcohol Poisoning, And Discovers That Listening In Class Can Affect Your Life

Andy was a high school ninth grader who frequently seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had an adventurous personality and regularly wanted to do what his older brothers were doing for fun. The main holdup with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were for than reason legally allowed to operate a truck or car and to consume alcohol.

Andy, however, had a hard time accepting the truth that as a fifteen-year-old person he should not be drinking alcoholic beverages. In fact, in spite of this, Andy often drank with his high school friends after school, largely on the weekends.

One weekend, Andy was invited to drive around with some of his older friends. One of his guy friends was old enough to purchase alcohol. After purchasing some beer, wine coolers, and wine, Andy and all of his pals went to a park and drank for about two or three hours.

After drinking more or less five alcoholic beverages, Andy started to feel woozy and then vomited. When he became unconscious near the outdoor swimming pool, one of his guy friends called 911 for immediate help. It was fortunate that the call for emergency help was made because when his buddies went to the hospital to see Andy, they discovered that Andy had been suffering from alcohol poisoning symptoms. In short, Andy had suffered through an alcohol overdose.

After getting alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was quite startled to realize that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had more or less five or ten drinks. When he told this to the attending healthcare professional at the hospital, however, the healthcare professional notified Andy that drinking five or ten cans of beer over a two or three hour time frame could certainly be significantly more alcohol than can be processed by the body. The doctor further conveyed how too much alcohol can cause the brain to shut down an individual's breathing and that when this takes place, an individual can perish.

This was the first word of warning to Andy that he was drinking in a hazardous manner and that there is a price tag for such behavior. The healthcare professional told Andy that he was a fortunate young man because he almost lost his life from alcohol poisoning the previous night.

The physician also conversed with Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol rehabilitation for Andy. His parents were relieved that Andy was safe and sound and notified the physician that they would look into getting Andy alcohol rehabilitation.

While conversing with his parents, Andy told them that there must be a good reason why he did not perish and that he felt a sense of thankfulness that he was still alive. He also notified his parents that the weirdest part about the entire drinking situation was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning the previous six week grading period in Mr. Johnson's health class.

At the time, what his health instructor, Mr. Johnson, was saying didn't seem to make too much sense to Andy. Since he almost died, in spite of this, he felt that he should have listened more alertly in class and applied what he had learned to his life.

Andy informed his parents that he couldn't wait to go back to Mr. Johnson's classroom and apologize to Mr. Johnson for not paying more attention to a topic that was as important as learning about alcohol poisoning.
