A Woman Manifest Signs Of Depression And Alcohol Abuse And Makes An Appointment To See Her Doctor
Cindy was a thirty-five-year-old physical therapist who realized that she had a problem with her drinking. For instance, within the past three months she has felt the need to have one or two drinks before going to work, four months ago she failed to pass a random blood alcohol test where she works, six weeks ago she got stopped by the police for "driving under the influence", and lastly, for approximately three months she has begun to forget what she says and does when she goes out drinking with her friends.
Like many other drinkers, Cindy's alcohol involvement started out slowly and remained at this level of involvement for quite some time because every now and again she engaged in occasional social drinking. In fact, for approximately three years, every time she went out to drink, she made sure to drink moderately. Something about her drinking, however, seemed to drastically change when she and her husband got divorced.
Cindy got very depressed about the breakup with her husband, and as a way to quit dwelling on her discouraging feelings she made up her mind that she would begin going out more often with some of her buddies who love to have fun drinking. It didn't take long, however, before her drinking escalated considerably the more frequently she went to and drank at dinner dates, private parties, family get-togethers, sporting events, and happy hours with her buddies.
In a word, she was partying just like everyone else in her group of friends without giving too much thought to the alcohol short term effects and particularly about the alcohol long term effects she has been going though. Yet somewhere in her awareness she realized the facts about the adverse alcohol effects on the body and on the brain and that she more likely than not needed alcohol rehab but sidestepped the thought as much as she could.
One morning during her yearly physical examination, her healthcare professional asked her if she drank alcohol. Not wanting to lie to her doctor, Cindy "came clean" and stated that she frequently drinks more than she should. In reality, she articulated that she regularly drinks in an excessive and abusive manner. Then Cindy informed her healthcare professional about her melancholy. More to the point, she mentioned that shattered relationships usually caused a disheartening sequence of events typified by increased drinking which further resulted in more discouraging feelings that, in turn, led to more drinking. And this is precisely what happened when she and her husband got divorced ten months ago.
Cindy's physician then stated the following: "I am not trying to make an unprepared analysis, but with your medical situation we may be dealing with two separate matters. As a result, I think we need to schedule an appointment for you to get an alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency evaluation from my partner, Dr. Verlich, who is an alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency specialist."
"Whether your drinking circumstance is more related to alcohol abuse or alcohol addiction is not clear, but I think that further assessment is reasonable. Then I think we should schedule an appointment for you to get a psychological examination from another one of my partners, Dr. Manning, who is a clinical psychologist."
"I want to get a better grip on your pessimism and see how much your drinking and depression are associated." Cindy displayed her endorsement of her physician's "game plan" and thanked him for his assistance.
