An Extremely Young Couple Assesses Their Drinking Behavior And Their Short And Long Range Dreams, Goals, And Aspirations

Linda and Frank have been dating for eight-and-a-half years. They met while enrolled in the same Spanish class at a relatively large, countryside, liberal arts college located in the far Western part of the United States. While they were simply good friends at first, they finally began dating when they were in their first year of college.

Because both of them came from very traditional backgrounds, neither one of them drank much beyond the testing stage when they first started to date. As the time progressed, however, they started to go to more keg parties, football bashes, happy hours, and sorority and fraternity parties. As a result, they steadily began to drink more the more they saw one another.

After they graduated, they both got jobs in a large city located roughly ninety-five miles from their undergraduate college. Then they finally decided to move into the same apartment together.

With any major modification in a person's life there is often a trigger the particular modification in question. For Frank and Linda the thought of buying a new house and having children was this "source of change." To come to the point, for the first time in their lives, Linda and Frank started to reflect on their drinking and the alcohol long term effects on their lives. As an illustration, they started to wonder if they would ever experience an alcohol overdose due to their heavy drinking.

All of these queries without a doubt pointed to the same conclusion, namely that Linda and Frank needed to realize that they couldn't maintain their hazardous and abusive drinking if their goals, dreams, and aspirations were to be fulfilled.

Once they arrived at this conclusion, they notified their drinking pals about their their marital plans, about their goal of buying or building a new house, and about their plans to start a family. They also told their drinking friends that they still wanted to associate with them but that they would be drinking responsibly from this time forward so that they could start realizing their future dreams, hopes, and aspirations.

Unpredictably, all of their pals expressed relief because they too had been recalculating their lives and concluded that their life-styles were totally centered around drinking. They also felt that they would have to change notably if they were to become more adult-like and show more care for their health, their plans, and for their careers in the next ten or fifteen years.

After their conversation with their friends about their goals, dreams, and aspirations, Linda and Frank in essence started to have more significant relationships with all of their friends. The fundamental reason for this was the fact that all of them had the same perspective regarding their excessive and hazardous drinking and their short and long-term goals, plans, and aspirations.
