It seems that all around us things are changing at a very fast rate. The main contributing factor to all the change seems to be the rise in the number of people that live in the United States. A few years ago my husband and I saw that rich individuals were purchasing up lots on lakes. They would find cottages for sale along the lakes area and would demolish the cottage and replace it with a gigantic brand-new structure. We noticed several smaller lakes that we liked fishing on were abruptly surrounded by gigantic homes. One lake in particular we noticed this happening on. The large homes took away the north woods feeling from the lake. My husband and I had discussed finding cottages available that we could fix up and have as a get away. We determined that the way properties were moving we had better make our move for cottages available while there were still some available.

You see, years before we had experienced a similar situation in the shore city of Santa Barbara. For years, we vacationed there and stayed in Santa Barbara hotels. We noticed people leasing cottages rather than stay in the somewhat expensive Santa Barbara hotels, and decided to look into a cottage rental to avoid paying steep rates at these Santa Barbara hotels. Well, looking to rent a cottage turned into wanting to buy, however, we waited too long and the market took off, with prices rising out of our range. We promised never to make the same mistake again.

We determined one Saturday afternoon to go for a drive around two lakes that we have always enjoyed. One of the lakes is very large and the other was littler, but there is a channel which goes from this small lake in to a larger lake. A great portion of this lake and the surrounding area were in a national park. We had been cross country skiing in the state park during the winter months and we had observed that there were numerous privately owned cabins adjacent to the state land. We commented on how private the area was. We went back to the place to see if anything was in the marketplace. We turned down one little road that we had never been on before. The road led to what had been a small resort. There were signs listing cottages on the market. The resort had been shut for many years. Most of the buildings needed to be repaired. Two of the cottages on the market had been modernized within the past six to seven years. The cottages were close to the edge of the lake and were surrounded by pine trees. It was a very lovely setting, but we were worried about who would do the upkeep on the road when it snowed. We're still looking at cottages on the market. I know that it is only a matter of time before we find the ideal place for us.
